Just as human life has a goal, every subject also has a goal. Psychology also has some goals. Like,
(1) Description
(2) Explanation
(3) Prediction
(4) Control.
(1) Description :
The aim of psychology is to describe human behaviour. The subject matter of psychology is human behavior. So how is human behavior? Physical, mental, internal, external, visible or not? As a result, what kind of changes occur? Etc. The goal of psychology is to describe things.
One of the goals of psychology is to find out the causes of human behavior and gain a true understanding of it. Psychologists try to explain behavior through causal relationships in a scientific manner. Why do people behave in certain ways? Psychology gives the answer to this question. By knowing the principles of behavior we can better understand the behavior of others. E.g. Children are sometimes severely punished when they disobey their parents. Parents do not know the real reasons for such inhibitory attitude of children. In fact, a child’s inhibitory attitude is rooted in depression. Thus, parents punish the child as they do not have proper understanding of the child’s behavior. In short, the primary goal of psychology is to provide a scientific understanding of behavior.
(2) Elucidation :
The second aim after the description of the subject matter is that of elucidation. Explanation: Why does an event, event or situation arise? Clarification of its reasons.
Psychology tries to explain why human behavior occurs by finding the reasons behind it. That is, it tries to clarify. For example, if a person is afraid of a certain situation, psychology explains the reasons behind it.
(3) Prediction:
A prediction or divination means a prediction regarding a field based on a rule established in any science.
Psychology does not stop at explaining behavior. Behavior is also predicted. Behavior can be predicted easily if the scientific understanding of behavior is clearly achieved. Psychologists aim to predict how a person will react or behave in different situations. For example, meteorology does not stop at describing or explaining the weather. But what will the weather be like? What will be the amount of heat? Will it rain or not? etc. also predicts. Similarly, the goal of psychology is to predict human behavior based on its own theories. For example, child-rearing practices in psychology are theories of how a child’s personality is shaped by how parents raise a child. Based on these principles, if a parent brings up a child in a very disciplined environment, it can be predicted that the child will be timid. That’s it Accordingly, psychology aims to predict human behavior based on theories related to learning, motivation, impulse etc.
(4) Control :
“Control is the success of efforts made to solve human problems, anxiety, adversities, etc., based on established rules.”
In other words, efforts to avoid harmful or distressing situations.
Every science has the goal of reducing human problems. For example, if the meteorologist predicts that there will be very heavy rain, efforts should be made to prevent flooding or to minimize the damage caused by flooding.
Similarly, psychology tries to control behavior to some extent by predicting certain consequences of behavior. E.g. If a child is found to have an IQ of less than 95 on an intelligence test, psychologists can clearly predict that the child will never become an engineer or a doctor. Psychologists can measure a person’s strengths and give suggestions to help them become well-adjusted in the future. Psychologists try to control behavior in advertising, industry, business, crime, etc. Some degree of behavioral control is possible, especially in transactional domains. However, psychologists cannot control behavior as precisely as other sciences.
Thus, the goals of psychology include description, explanation, prediction, and regulation. Also the attempts to make human life happier, richer, peaceful and enjoyable through psychology in the present day
are happening Thus the goal of psychology is also to improve the quality of human life.
